Polaris Programme

The Polaris programme was not simply the development of a missile, but the construction of an entire operational system.

As the fleet expanded, submarines, missiles, bases, logistics, training facilities and crews became part of a continuously evolving nuclear deterrent.

By the mid-1960s, the A-3 missile had extended the system's range to 2,500 miles while retaining compatibility with the existing Polaris submarine fleet. Behind the weapons was an equally extensive infrastructure of assembly, testing, maintenance and crew training.

The system was never considered complete. New technology required continuing training and modification, while the emerging Poseidon missile pointed towards its eventual replacement.

Polaris remained active through adaptation.
